We were given the web address: h6musicvideo.wordpress.com To help us analyse a music video, we first need to identify the basic codes and conventions of a music video. -A song ranging from 3-5minutes - The artist(s) lip syncing (a large amount of screen time) - A high cutting ratio There are 4 techniques music videos can use: • Split Screen • Green Screen • Cutting on beat •Surrealism There are 8 categories regarding type of music video: •Performance ~this is when the video composes of varied performances of the artist(essentially, it is eye catching and entertaining). •Concept ~ this is a visual illustration of an abstract idea. • Story/Narrative ~ a visual representation of the story the lyrics are telling •Gag ~ a video that uses visual tricks. •Dance ~ choreography based music videos •Animation ~ a video composed of computer generated images (CGI) •Party or Club •Film Clip ~ this features clips from a movie and the music from the soundtrack of the given movie With this information, we had to pick our music video style, I decided that our music video style is mixture between concept and narrative as our song is R&B. Our song "Treat Me Like Somebody" by Tink; explores love in relationships, it has a softness and slowness to the melody. I think the lyrics also tell a story through the lines " Is there too much? I just want an answer" "I just want somebody to treat me like somebody". The concept revolves around being appreciated and loved for who you are, but I also think a story can be told through showing different connections/interactions with various people, that actually explore relationships and perceptions of love in general (relationship between mother and child, friendships, sibling love, rolemodels, etc) rather then a traditional romantic relationship, then leads to the artist being with someone special in the end as I visualise that type of story when listening to the lyrics. Our artist "Mariko Giselle" ; she is quite sentimental and meaningful; looking to inspire through her music but also to relate to her audience, making it clear that our video style should use a mixture of concept ('love') and story(different interpretations of that concept) to relate to her audience. I think by relating to our audience gives us an advantage as it will make them feel comfortable, in the sense that even "famous" people experience different hardships regarding both romantic relationships and unconditional relationships/friendships, making them favour our artist even more.
