When comparing my artist to similar texts I initially think of; Alessia Cara, Jhene Aiko, Kehlani and Sza.Regarding visual style and personality; I think my artist relates to Alessia Cara more so than the others. This is due to her also being a socially awkward teenager who avoids using voyeurism in her music videos. Alessia Cara often discusses how her music is revolved around the socially awkward teenager she identifies with and how not every teenager enjoys being at social gatherings. Mariko Giselle does have elements of awkwardness but more so discusses embodying her true authentic self as oppose to conforming to societal norms and the dominant ideology of being a socialite at a young age who is over sexualised in her music videos.

Mariko Giselle is similar to Kehlani in terms of edginess and fashion style. As Kehlani has a mixture of tomboy and girly fashion depending on her mood; Mariko has the same if not similar approach regarding her style. However, Mariko avoids voyeuristic and sexual elements within her fashion to emulate a sense of innocence while developing the codes and conventions of RnB.

Regarding Jhene Aiko, Mariko is similar in terms of sound. Jhene’s voice is quite subtle and soft like Mariko’s; her music has an airy and soft-spoken approach to her music. As Jhene doesn’t have several music videos but releases several tracks it adds to her ambiguity of who her true identity is. Similarly, Mariko’s music video will not directly tell you who she is as a person and what she stands for as that will be hidden within the visuals and layers of the medium, breaking the dominant ideology of RnB artists music video’s being invasive, obvious and bold when showing their audience who they are as an artist.

Lastly, SZA and Mariko share similarities within their boldness in opinions, though Mariko leans to the introverted side of the spectrum, her opinions are quite bold as she believes in honesty. Sza is also known for her boldness in opinion and style, as she is often categorised as having an Afropunk style though her music is RnB.
