The font is a crucial component when constructing an artist’s identity; this is due to different styles of font connote the chosen genre of the artist. For instance, “Jessie J”s style of font is a mixture between serif and sans-serif; suggesting her genre is a mixture between RnB and Pop. Serif style font is demonstrated through the tails of the “J”s notably, this enables brand continuity through the use of the font used to promote her name. Though my genre is also RnB a font like this removes the modern element that my artist personifies through her style, values and music. Thus, preventing the development of the original codes and conventions of Rhythm and Blues.

Another example would be ‘Snakehips”; the font used to promote their albums and tours is sans serif and quite simple unlike their music genre, electronic. Though the font embodies simplicity in a bold, italic font; it is easy to read, recognise and creates an element to enjoy the complexity of the layers of sounds and tempos within their music. Initially, I wanted a simplistic font to prevent my abstract images clashing with an exaggerated font, however, this style of font is almost too simplistic as it removes a sense of modernism.

“Rae Sremmurd’s SremmLife” uses sans serif font for their album title yet uses a serif font for the duo's name. This contrast is commonly used on rap and hip hop albums as it adds to the development of rap and hip-hop over the period from which they originally originated, the 1970s to present day. Ironically, the font and colour used for the title of the album are used as a representation of blood dripping; relating to the duo's name “Sremmurd” as in “murder”. This wouldn't be effective in relation to my artist's identity as a result of portraying a different genre, though it is creative use of font it does not relate to the chosen genre of my artust as well as her style and values.

Although “Tinashe’s” album uses a sans serif font that is simplistic, it has futuristic elements that suggest modern RnB. This can be seen in the construction of the “A”, adding to the dynamics of the album but also proposing a component of edginess within her style and music. This would be more suited to my artist and genre as it develops the codes and conventions of fonts used for RnB artists while adding to the modernism portrayed through my artists style.
